I have been growing plants my whole life. As a Midwest family we grew many different things. There was a garden border around the house, plants hanging inside, outside and several gardens to provide food for us and close friends, family or to anyone that was in need. It was wonderful. We had things to grow, care for AND be able to provide for others. Something that has stuck with me for life. It was a country home surrounded by farmers. So of course the human my dad was had a few of those extra gardens for deer, raccoons and other wildlife. He loved providing and taking care of nature. The biggest reason he did the extra gardens was to help the surrounding farmers. “If we can provide the deer with extra food they won’t be eating farmers profit.” He literally grew food for animals so the would not take from farmers business. Who does that?! As an adult I know that the few gardens we had would not of made a big impact to the local farmers, but but he did what he could do to help. Now, as an adult in the desert I have yet to figure out how to successfully grow food for family and friends, but am unwilling to give up trying! As of now I have many gorgeous (and some not so gorgeous) plants that I am continually learning to care for. Not close to a professional but learning more and more all the time. The goal is to eventually have a community garden that provides food for underprivileged, but until then it is learning how to keep the multitude of plants alive, and hopefully to teach someone else, or maybe even just to make your life easier to not have to research endless sites just to learn how to keep that new plant baby alive!
